Family Night

May it be our resolve this year to build a gospel-centered home, a safe harbor from the storms of the adversary.
L. Tom Perry "The Importance of Family" 2003 General Conference

Recently we welcomed Hattie Joyce into our home and family. She’s a red-headed blue-eyed solace to us all. She is named for her maternal Great-great-great grandmother and her paternal great grandmother. Both women created a safe haven from their homes and it is significant that Hattie means ruler of the hearth.
To help make our home a refuge, we have a family night at home on Mondays. We sing hymns, pray, read scriptures, eat treats and do science experiments. That’s right, in an effort to get my children and husband (an engineer in all things) more excited about family night we have started doing small science experiments, sometimes we even relate them to spiritual things. I hope your family enjoys them as much as we have.

Anchor Object Lesson
The inspiration for this family night came from an article written by Dieter Uchdorf
"A Firmly Set Anchor" President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

“Anchors must be solid, strong, and well maintained to be ready when needed. In addition, they must be attached to a foundation capable of bearing the weight of opposing forces.
"Of course, the gospel of Jesus Christ is such an anchor. It was prepared by the Creator of the universe for a divine purpose and designed to provide safety and guidance to His children."

To set the scene I tied a 3 oz weight from my husband's tackle box onto one of the boy's toy boats then put it in a big plastic bin full of water. In addition to talking about the gospel, we learned what an anchor is and how it keeps the boat safe in stormy as well as calm seas. Then of course we had fun splashing in the water. I recommend doing this activity in the kitchen or putting towels down!
